SSE Tournament Champions!
After three days and 4 straight victories, the West London Minor Novice Hawks were crowned the SSE Minor Novice A Tournament Champions!
The boys had a repeat match vs the Clarkson Hurricanes in the final. After squeaking out a 5-4 victory in round-robin play, we knew it would be another hard fought battle.
Clarkson came to play, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after one period. They added another in the second before our boys dug deep, cutting the lead to 2-1 while on a two-man power play. But the Hurricanes didn't back down, regaining their two goal cushion shortly thereafter.
After some furious action, we banged home another goal to make it 3-2. Our Hawks dominated play most of the game, but the Clarkson goaltender was equal to the task. He turned away several great shots by our boys, getting some help from his goalposts (we hit at least THREE!).
Then with 4 minutes left in the third, Greenwell found the puck on his stick and buried a hard shot low to the glove side. We had a tie game and the fans were going crazy! We took a late timeout to plan the final minute of play. Once we started, Clarkson was battling hard in our zone. We regained possession of the puck with time winding down, breaking quickly out of our zone. Richardson hit Greenwell with a nice pass streaking through the neutral zone with only a few seconds left on the clock....Greenwell stepped around the defenseman, and did his patented toe-drag top glove side shot, burying the game winner with 1.9 seconds left on the clock! The stadium erupted with clap-happy parents giving their boys a standing ovation!
It was an intense and satisfying victory for the team. As Coach Geoff said before the game, nothing worth having comes easy...and this game was a testament to that. The entire team contributed to this championship, and they should all be very proud. Nice work boys....
