Sportsmanship
Hey Gang, I am going to review the attached sheet with the players over the next while, it is basically about sportsmanship and how to be a good teammate.  It can be tough when a team goes through a first half of the season like we have!  There have not been any specific big issues but I am starting to hear blaming and such on the bench so I thought it was a good time to go over this.  It seems to happen every year around this time!

Hawks Minor Bantam W17 Sportsmanship

Date:     12/20/2014

Why do players show poor sportsmanship?

·         Frustrated

·         Attempting to get a reaction out of you like retaliation (which might get you a penalty)

·         Don’t know any better

·

Our Team rule

·         Players will respect … -Themselves -  Teammates - Coaches - The other team - The official

What is good sportsmanship?

1.     Playing fair

2.     Being a good teammate

                                  i.    Playing as a line or 5-man unit

ii.    Supporting & helping each other

iii.    Looking out for each other

iv.    Passing the puck to a teammate

                                 v.    Changing after an appropriate shift length

3.     Following the rules of the game and rules of the team

4.     Respecting the judgment of referees … never argue their calls

a.     even if you suspect the referees made some questionable calls

5.     Treating opponents with respect

6.     Staying cool … even if others are losing their tempers, it doesn't mean you have to

7.     Self control … never retaliating when an opponent does something to you

8.     Congratulating the winners

9.     Avoid settling disputes with violence

·         If someone's threatening you, seek help immediately from your coach

·         Remember, too, that if you respond with violence you could get penalized, which could hurt your chances of winning and most importantly playing and having fun.

10.  Never …

·         intentionally injure an opponent

·         fake an injury to get a time out

·         "Trash talk" or taunt opponents

·         showboat

·         call teammates or opponents names or bully them

Examples … how do you respond?

1.     Opponent slashes you repeatedly and the referees do not call a penalty

2.     A teammate calls you a name or bullies you

3.     Referee calls a goal against your team, but you know the puck didn’t go into the net

4.     You fall down and the opponent purposely knees you in the head

5.     Your teammate tells you that the next time the other teams goalie makes a save he is going to take a swipe at the puck to “get in his head”

Homework – discuss the above examples with your parents
