How the West Was Won
The West London Hawks Minor PeeWee MD team secured its first tournament win of the year this Sunday.

Following some tough tournament results in Port Huron, Rochester, Brantford and North London, the team was looking for gold and a kick start to the Alliance Play-offs.

The Hawks faced tough competition in their first game against the Brampton Wolf Pack.  While dominating play on the ice, they struggled to score on Brampton’s imposing goaltender.  The result was a 1-1 tie.

Game two saw a continuation of the effort and skill displayed in game one, handing the Caledon Blackhawks a 7-3 loss.  Caledon showed tremendous class visiting the Hawks dressing room following the game to present each player a small gift.

The George Bell Titans caught the Hawks unprepared Saturday morning leading to a humbling 6-2 defeat.

The team bounced back Saturday evening with a solid effort and a 3-2 victory over a strong London Nationals team.  The win was backed by a strong performance by goaltender Matthew Govier.  This victory combined with a Titan loss secured a spot in the finals on Sunday.  A 3-0 victory over Brampton created a re-match with long-time rivals North London.

Both teams played a strong game.  Hawk’s goalie Preston Swan-Merrison proved to be the difference.  Veteran defenceman Jack Cunningham opened the scoring early in the second period.  Rookie Will Oxner scored the winning goal while Max Granger added one for insurance.  The final score was 3-1.

The team now begins its ten game play-off schedule with the goal of representing the West at the Alliance Championship in St. Catharines.
